AKC Herding Breed Judge

I began judging for the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 2010, and currently judge 18 of the herding breeds: Australian Cattle Dog, Australian Shepherd, Beauceron, Belgian Malinois, Belgian Tervuren, Belgian Sheepdog, Berger Picard, Border Collie, Bouvier, Canaan Dog, Cardigan Welsh Corgi, Collie (Rough), Collie (Smooth), Miniature American Shepherd, Norwegian Behind, Pulik, Pyrenean Shepherd, Swedish Vallhund . My goal is to judge all of the breeds in the AKC Herding Group. Extensive stock-herding experience has given me a strong understanding of form and function, and the unique style and character of each herding breed as it relates to its traditional purpose.

In 1992, with my Belgian Tervurens, I began learning the work of herding dogs through private lessons, clinics, seminars and ranch visits. I have participated in over 100 herding tests and trials including American Kennel Club (AKC), American Herding Breed Association (AHBA), Australian Shepherd Club of America (ASCA), Border Collie International, and HGH Tending, as well as many herding clinics and workshops. I have hands-on experience as a sheep herding trainer with 15 herding breeds. Because of my strong herding background I feel very well prepared to judge the herding breeds.

Thank you Cardigan Welsh Corgi owners for entering your dogs under me at the upcoming Wallkill Kennel Club dog show in Suffern NY, on February 25, 2016. It's a 5 point major in class dogs and a 4 point major in class bitches! 7-9 (4-1).

Looking forward to judging for the Suffolk County Kennel Club on Sept. 26, 2015, in St. James, NY. Especially happy to be judging the NOHS Herding Group! In the new National Owner Handled Series (NOHS), no professional handlers are allowed to show. The dogs must be owned by their handlers. Speaking as an owner-handler myself, I think this is super duper!

I am delighted to report that I have been assigned Permit status in ACDs, Bouviers, Cardigans and Buhunds. This brings me up to 11 herding breeds I can now judge.

Just successfully took my oral breed tests for more AKC herding breeds - the Australian Cattle Dog, Bouvier des Flandres, Cardigan Welsh Corgi, Norwegian Buhund. I also passed the Wicket Test, in which I must show competence in measuring the height of a demo dog. Now I wait while the judges committee reviews my breed essays and test reports. Wish me luck!
